NTT eyes potential data centers in Saudi Arabia

The Japanese company NTT is studying expansion in the Middle East by establishing new data centers, a move aimed at capitalizing on the rapid surge in artificial intelligence within the region, particularly in Saudi Arabia, which has become a regional hub for digital transformation and investment in future technologies.

In an interview with Bloomberg, NTT Data CEO Abhijeet Dubey stated that the company is seriously considering building data centers in Saudi Arabia as part of its global plans to expand digital infrastructure and support the increasing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence capabilities.

During his visit to Riyadh, Dubey noted that there is a clear gap between supply and demand in what Saudi Arabia aims to achieve within this short timeframe, and the current available capabilities. He added: “I am here specifically due to the great interest in artificial intelligence, and what Saudi Arabia represents as a fertile environment for developing these technologies.”

Although NTT has not announced any official commitments to build yet, it continues to explore the options available within Saudi Arabia, in light of the strong government push towards developing local data centers that support digital transformation plans and Vision 2030.

NTT manages over 150 data center facilities in 20 countries around the world and is working to expand its business through the NTT GDC unit. The company also plans to invest more than $10 billion by 2027 to develop new facilities, with a particular focus on fast-growing markets like Saudi Arabia.

NTT’s interest in the Saudi market reflects the kingdom’s growing stature in the global digital transformation landscape and its increasingly pivotal role as a key hub for artificial intelligence technologies in the Middle East. Additionally, the trend of global companies like NTT towards Saudi Arabia indicates a strategic shift in the tech investment map, as the kingdom seeks to establish itself as a regional data center that serves the global artificial intelligence infrastructure.
