Veritiv launches compact cold chain packaging for pharmaceuticals

Veritiv develops compact packaging for temperature-sensitive medicines

Veritiv has launched TempSafe RxShield, a compact cold chain packaging solution designed to protect refrigerated pharmaceutical products during transportation and distribution.

The new format expands Veritiv’s TempSafe portfolio beyond larger bulk and pallet applications, targeting pharmaceutical shipments where maintaining controlled temperatures is essential but package size and transport efficiency are equally important.

The development responds to growing demand for temperature-controlled distribution as more medicines, biologics and specialty therapies require refrigerated handling throughout the supply chain.

Compact format targets pharmaceutical distribution

Pharmaceutical cold chain packaging must maintain a defined temperature range while protecting the product against external environmental conditions.

At the same time, oversized thermal packaging can increase dimensional weight, storage requirements and transportation costs.

TempSafe RxShield has therefore been designed around a more compact format, helping pharmaceutical distributors balance thermal protection with the operational requirements of smaller shipments.

Cold chain performance remains critical

Temperature excursions can compromise the quality and efficacy of sensitive medicines, making validated packaging an important part of pharmaceutical logistics.

Packaging systems used for these products must account for changing ambient conditions during storage, handling and transportation.

Veritiv’s TempSafe portfolio is designed to provide controlled thermal protection across these supply-chain conditions, supporting products that cannot tolerate extended exposure outside their specified temperature range.

Packaging becomes increasingly important as specialty medicines grow

The pharmaceutical market is seeing continued growth in biologics, specialty therapies and other products with demanding storage requirements.

Many of these medicines require refrigerated or otherwise tightly controlled conditions, increasing demand for validated shipping systems that can protect products during direct distribution.

This is particularly important as pharmaceutical supply chains become more decentralised and products move directly from manufacturers and distributors to healthcare providers, pharmacies and patients.

Veritiv expands its TempSafe portfolio

The RxShield launch follows Veritiv’s earlier expansion of its TempSafe range with larger cold chain formats.

In 2025, the company introduced TempSafe PalletShield, a fibre-based pallet shipper designed for bulk biopharmaceutical shipments and capable of providing more than five days of validated thermal protection.

That solution uses kerbside-recyclable components and targets applications including vaccines, biologics, clinical trial materials and high-value therapies.

Cold chain packaging must balance protection and efficiency

The development of smaller temperature-controlled formats reflects a broader shift in pharmaceutical logistics towards packaging that is both technically validated and operationally efficient.

Reducing unnecessary package volume can lower transport requirements, improve warehouse utilisation and make direct-to-patient distribution more practical.

At the same time, thermal performance cannot be compromised simply to reduce package size, meaning insulation, refrigerants and internal configuration must be engineered as an integrated system.

Pharmaceutical packaging moves towards application-specific designs

The RxShield launch illustrates how cold chain packaging is becoming increasingly specialised according to shipment size, product requirements and distribution model.

Rather than relying on a single universal shipper, pharmaceutical logistics providers can use different formats according to the quantity and sensitivity of the medicines being transported.

As temperature-sensitive therapies become more widespread, these application-specific packaging systems will become increasingly important for maintaining product integrity while controlling the cost and environmental impact of pharmaceutical distribution.
