Tutor Perini Corporation (NYSE: TPC) (the “Company”), a leading civil, building and specialty construction company, announced today that its subsidiary, Fisk Electric Company (“Fisk”), has been awarded an electrical services contract for a confidential data center customer in Houston, Texas. The contract value is approximately $24 million.
Fisk’s scope of work includes prefabrication and assembly of modular containment systems and related electrical infrastructure, including liquid-cooled components and piping, for a new ground-up data center. These units will be built at Fisk’s new 75,000-square-foot prefabrication/manufacturing facility in Houston.
This new emerging prefabrication market is in high demand due to the nationwide shortage of electricians, enabling Fisk to increase its prefabrication work when serving as the prime electrical contractor supporting data center owners, developers, and general contractors in refining offsite manufacturing to ensure schedules are met with the limited resources available nationwide.
Electrical construction work is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 with substantial completion anticipated in the first quarter of 2027. The contract value will be reflected in the Company’s backlog for the third quarter of 2026.
Why It Matters
This isn’t just a win for Fisk; it’s a flashing red light for the entire industry. Data centers are the new oil, fueled by AI and electrification, and demand is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. GCs who aren’t actively pursuing this sector are leaving money on the table; traditional methods are too slow, hence the modular approach. Subcontractors specializing in electrical, mechanical, and fire protection, particularly those capable of offsite fabrication, will see a massive influx of work. Owners and developers are prioritizing speed-to-market and reliability, pushing for modular solutions to shave months off schedules. Suppliers need to anticipate surging demand for specialized components, while construction tech companies can provide solutions for complex logistics and integration of modular systems. The scale of capital investment in data centers will reshape regional labor markets and material supply chains, creating both opportunities and bottlenecks.
Who Should Pay Attention
General Contractors need to reassess their market strategy and resource allocation to capture data center projects. Subcontractors, especially in electrical, mechanical, and structural steel, must invest in offsite fabrication capabilities and specialized training. Developers and Owners must understand the capital expenditure and operational demands of hyperscale facilities, favoring partners who can deliver modularly and at speed. Suppliers should anticipate major increases in demand for high-voltage gear, cooling systems, and critical power infrastructure. Construction Technology Companies should develop tools for modular coordination, supply chain visibility, and advanced project controls for these complex, fast-track builds.
What This Means Moving Forward
Expect a fierce race for talent and resources in the coming 6-12 months as more players pivot to data centers. Modular construction will become a non-negotiable expectation for critical infrastructure, forcing traditional contractors to adapt or lose ground. We’ll see significant investment in regional fabrication facilities and prefabrication capabilities to support this demand. Pricing power for specialized subs and suppliers will increase due to scarcity. The industry will also face pressure to innovate in power generation and cooling solutions, driving demand for sustainable and efficient building practices. Those who can scale quickly and integrate advanced methodologies will dominate this market segment.
The Takeaway
Assess your current capabilities against the demands of data center construction; identify gaps in talent, technology, and prefabrication expertise immediately. Invest in training your workforce for modular assembly and specialized system integration, particularly in electrical and mechanical trades. Build strategic alliances with modular manufacturers and technology providers to enhance your project delivery speed and efficiency for these hyper-accelerated schedules.
