Decarbonising off-highway machinery is an important step toward achieving global climate goals. The off-highway sector, which includes construction, agriculture, and mining machinery, is a major contributor to CO2 emissions. As governments and businesses increasingly focus on sustainability, the pressure to reduce emissions in this sector is mounting. However, decarbonisation is a challenge due to the demanding operating conditions of these machines.

The heavy reliance on diesel engines which have been the backbone of off-highway machinery for decades is a significant hurdle. These engines are powerful, reliable, and capable of handling the tough environments in which they operate. Transitioning to cleaner alternatives, such as electric or hydrogen-powered engines, requires significant innovation in both technology and infrastructure. While electric machines are becoming more popular in certain applications, their range and charging times are still limitations in many off-highway scenarios. Hydrogen-fuelled engines are a viable alternative for heavy-duty machinery applications, but the technology is still in its early stages of development.

It is incredibly important that there is a collaboration between manufacturers, suppliers, and policymakers to prioritise the decarbonisation process. Governments should provide clearer regulatory frameworks and incentives to encourage the integration of sustainable technologies. Tax breaks, grants, or subsidies for companies investing in green technologies could provide the financial incentives needed to decarbonise the industry. The development of charging infrastructure for electric machines and hydrogen refuelling stations is essential to making alternative power sources more likely to be adopted by end-users.

The entire value chain, from production to operation, must be prioritising decarbonisation efforts. This includes improving the energy efficiency of production processes, sourcing materials sustainably, and reducing emissions from logistics and transportation. Off-highway machinery manufacturers should be incentivised to explore digital technologies, such as telematics and predictive maintenance, to optimise machine performance and reduce fuel consumption.

Turntide, an exhibitor at our upcoming event DZOMUSA, provides proven electrification solutions for commercial vehicles and industrial equipment. With their acquisition of three of the world’s most innovative transport companies, BorgWarner Gateshead, Avid Technology and Hyperdrive, they bring together decades of industry experience, deep expertise, and best-in-class technologies to deliver award-winning EV solutions to top brands across industries. The Turntide mission is to decarbonize global industries, catalysing change through innovation. Turntide can aid any industry in their goals, they are your electrification ally to help you on your journey.

Decarbonising off-highway machinery is possible with technological innovation, regulatory support, and industry collaboration. To discuss the future of decarbonisation efforts for off-highway vehicle manufacturers and users, attend the DZOMUSA EXPO, taking place at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Centre in Chicago, IL, on December 3–4, 2024.
