Advances in battery tech for data centers

The explosive growth of AI has turned data center battery tech from a background utility concern into a strategic priority. As computing facilities scale into the gigawatt range, the batteries that back them up are being asked to do far more than simply ride out a power outage.

From Backup Power to Strategic Infrastructure

AI workloads don’t draw power the way traditional servers do. Data centers now move through distinct phases — training, optimization, and full operation — and each one demands a different energy and power profile, creating dynamic swings in grid load. That volatility places new demands on battery technology.

Energy storage systems are increasingly essential not just for keeping data centers resilient, but for cutting the long wait times facilities face when connecting to the grid, since deploying storage lets operators accept interruptible interconnection agreements that would otherwise disqualify them. This shift is also reflected in market data: the global data center battery market is expected to nearly double in value over the next several years, driven largely by AI-related demand.

Lithium-Ion Remains the Workhorse, With Limits

Lithium-ion batteries continue to dominate new installations, largely because they shrink UPS footprints and cut system weight compared to older lead-acid technology. Their charge monitoring at the module and cell level also makes them well-suited to modern battery management systems.

But lithium-ion isn’t a universal fit. The chemistry is optimized for short discharges and limited duty cycles, and was never designed to track a data center’s power curve continuously throughout the day. AI infrastructure, with its rapid, repeated swings in demand, is exposing that limitation.

Flow Batteries Step In for Continuous Cycling

This is where flow batteries are carving out a role. Unlike lithium-ion, flow batteries can sustain continuous cycling and endurance-heavy duty cycles, making them a better match for the erratic, all-day power curves AI campuses generate. Industry analysts expect flow battery developers to increasingly target data centers specifically because these facilities prioritize safety and minimal degradation over repeated cycling — advantages that lithium-ion’s flammable electrolyte and capacity fade can’t always match.

Choosing the Right Chemistry

With more battery types entering the picture, selection has become more deliberate. Buyers now weigh lifecycle performance, maintenance needs, and reliability alongside a battery’s capacity to support redundancy and keep operations running through failures. Recyclability and long-term sustainability are increasingly factored into that decision as well, not just upfront cost.

Backup runtime also matters. Data center UPS batteries are typically sized to bridge the gap between a utility failure and generator startup, while separate battery energy storage systems are designed for longer, deeper cycling to store excess energy for later use — a distinction that’s becoming more important as facilities layer multiple storage technologies together.

Rethinking the Grid Relationship

Perhaps the biggest shift in data center battery tech is philosophical. Facilities are no longer just power consumers waiting for the grid to catch up — they’re becoming active participants in grid stability. Properly deployed storage can convert a data center’s demand volatility from a liability into a stabilizing resource for the broader electrical system, smoothing the ramp-rate and power-quality issues that utilities have flagged as emerging challenges.

Looking Ahead

As AI infrastructure continues its rapid buildout, no single battery chemistry is likely to dominate every use case. Lithium-ion will remain central to backup power, while flow batteries and other emerging technologies gain ground wherever continuous, high-intensity cycling is the norm. For operators, staying current on data center battery tech isn’t optional anymore — it’s becoming central to how reliably, efficiently, and sustainably tomorrow’s AI-driven facilities will run.
