A strong serialization program is built on several pillars: unique product identification (a secure code carrying batch number, expiry date, product ID, and serial number); tamper-proof application of scannable codes, with GS1-compliant QR codes offering stronger counterfeit protection than standard codes; hierarchical aggregation from unit to pack to carton to pallet, which speeds up scanning during logistics operations; on-demand verification to confirm authenticity; and traceability reporting, where data is shared with central authorities or partner systems strictly on a need-to-know basis in line with regulatory requirements.

A Shifting Global Regulatory Landscape

Serialization requirements now span the globe. In the United States, the Drug Supply Chain Security Act mandates serialization and interoperability among all trading partners. The European Union’s Falsified Medicines Directive requires safety features and verification checks at dispensing points like pharmacies. India requires serialization and aggregation for exported pharmaceutical products, while China enforces extensive reporting through digital product identification codes. Russia mandates serialization and centralized reporting through its national digital track-and-trace system. Across Africa, countries including Nigeria and Kenya have introduced their own verification and reporting frameworks, with more nations following suit to combat counterfeit medicines.
