Yanmar accelerates sustainable innovation with a new Electrification Unit, delivering cutting-edge e-powertrain solutions for compact machinery. Yanmar, the Japanese industrial equipment manufacturer, has announced the launch of a new Electrification Unit, marking a significant step towards zero-emission solutions in the compact off-highway machinery sector.

Set to commence operations in April 2025, the new division will focus on delivering cutting-edge e-powertrain solutions, including advanced battery systems and eDrives. The latest move underlines Yanmar’s commitment to its brand vision of “A Sustainable Future,” reflecting its drive to provide advanced solutions for global industrial challenges. 

Positioned as a component manufacturer, supplier and integrator, the newly formed Electrification Unit will collaborate closely with Yanmar’s established customer base to develop electric-powered solutions for excavators, wheel loaders and other industrial machinery.

The division’s focus will revolve around three key product categories:

• Yanmar-branded industrial machinery
• Machinery for OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)
• E-powertrains and components for industrial applications

By advancing these sectors, Yanmar aims to lead the charge in the industry’s transition towards zero-emission machinery. Tetsuya Yamamoto, Chief Operating Officer of Yanmar Holdings, highlighted the importance of the development, stating: “This initiative is a major milestone in Yanmar’s commitment to realising our brand statement, ‘A Sustainable Future.’

The development of e-powertrains is crucial for adapting the expertise we have built with diesel engines to a broader range of applications beyond just construction and agricultural machinery and it represents an important step towards achieving carbon neutrality.” He further stressed the urgency of addressing climate change and the necessity of electric powertrains in achieving a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Yanmar has made substantial investments in research and development to cement its position as a frontrunner in zero-emission technology. A notable milestone was the 2022 acquisition of Eleo Technologies, enhancing Yanmar’s capabilities in battery technology.

The Electrification Unit will operate with high strategic autonomy, enabling swift decision-making and innovation. By leveraging Yanmar’s extensive global network, the unit will ensure a broad reach and specialised expertise across different regions.

Drawing upon the company’s wealth of resources—including technical know-how, service support and deep industry insight—the new entity is well-positioned to tackle the challenges of electrification in industrial machinery.

The initiative aligns seamlessly with Yanmar’s broader Green Challenge 2050 framework, which focuses on reducing environmental impact through electrification, hydrogen fuel exploration, alternative energy sources and resource recycling.

Marko Dekena, a seasoned expert in electric and alternative energy powertrains within the automotive sector, will guide the electrification unit. With a distinguished career in sustainable propulsion technologies, Dekena’s leadership will be instrumental in steering Yanmar’s electrification efforts.

“By leveraging Yanmar’s deep understanding of our customers’ needs, we are dedicated to delivering technologies that will accelerate the transition toward zero emissions,” stated Dekena. The new unit will integrate existing e-powertrain initiatives, including Eleo Technologies’ battery technology operations, ensuring continuity and enhanced development in electric machinery.

By establishing the Electrification Unit, Yanmar reinforces its position as an industry leader in sustainable industrial solutions. The initiative supports the ongoing transformation of the compact off-highway machinery sector and lays the groundwork for a cleaner, greener future.
