There has been a global push towards the use of electric vehicles globally, with the focus being cutting CO2 emissions and improving fuel economy. However, the process of manufacturing batteries to power these EVs produces pollutants that put workers and the greater environment at risk. Manufacturers must prioritise air filtration to ensure an ultra-clean environment and minimise the risk of contamination, it is critical to the safe operation of a gigafactory.

Air filtration in lithium-ion gigafactories ensures both the safety of workers and the integrity of the batteries. The production of lithium-ion batteries involves handling hazardous materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite, which can generate particulate matter, toxic fumes, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Without proper filtration, these substances can pose significant health risks, including respiratory issues, skin irritation, and long-term exposure to carcinogenic materials.

Air filtration systems help control and reduce the concentration of harmful airborne contaminants in production areas. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and activated carbon filters are commonly used to capture fine particulates and absorb VOCs, respectively. HEPA filters are particularly effective in removing ultrafine particles (as small as 0.3 microns), which are prevalent during the electrode manufacturing stage when powder handling is most intensive.

Filtration is essential in preventing contamination that could lead to battery defects. Impurities in the manufacturing environment can cause internal short circuits or reduced battery performance, increasing the risk of thermal runaway—a dangerous situation where a battery rapidly overheats, potentially leading to explosions or fires. Proper air filtration minimizes the likelihood of such contamination, enhancing both product quality and operational safety.

Bry-Air, Gold Sponsor of our upcoming 2nd Battery Gigafactory Summit USA: Advances in Planning, Engineering and Operations, provides an optimum solution for the efficient removal of corrosive gases and airborne contaminants causing corrosion in electronic/electric circuits, bad odour, and harmful gases from the atmosphere housing critical systems, such as data centres, server rooms, research labs, diagnostic systems, and cold storage. Their Gas Phase Filtration System, combined with their Bry-Air Dehumidifiers capable of maintaining low humidity levels, preventing moisture build-up and halting the corrosion process, is an effective combination to remove airborne contaminants and keep battery manufacturing efficient.

Air filtration systems, along with regular maintenance and monitoring, are essential for creating a safe manufacturing environment and reducing occupational hazards. Air filtration not only protects the health of workers but also ensures the production of high-quality and safe batteries. To meet with Bry-Air and their representatives, network with peers and solution providers and attend talks from industry leaders, book your place to attend the 2nd Battery Gigafactory Summit USA: Advances in Planning, Engineering and Operations taking place in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 13–14, 2024.
